It's a map, it's a map, it's a map, it's a map, it's a map. It's a map!
Dora, I hate you. Not as much as I hate Boots and Map, mind you, but it's still hatred and I will not hesitate to label it as such. I will get into that more on another day, but for now, suffice it to say that I can't even think of a map without that song popping into my head.
It goes without saying then, that this activity resulted in that song looping through my head, ad nauseum.
No cartography lessons, thank you very much |
While the boys were napping, I drew up a map of the playroom. Ellie had a good time getting her bearings with the map for a few minutes, and then she said she wanted a pirate map. I took that to mean that she wanted to search for treasure, so I hid one of her toys and marked an X on the spot where I had hidden it. Ellie LOVED searching for the treasure. She was absolutely giddy as she searched around the room. She was still struggling to wrap her head around how the map correlated to places in the room, but she would get it eventually (with just a little bit of coaching).
We did this a few more times with different spots in the room, which was a lot of fun, but you can only put so many x's on a map before it starts to get confusing -- which is how we came up with the best part of this idea;
Laminate the map.
That way, you can mark the location of the treasure with dry erase markers, and then you can just erase it when you're done and mark a new location. Much easier than redrawing the map every time.
So there you have it. High Fun-to-Effort ratio.
